What is chiropractic? Well, it originated from the Greek term "Chiroprakticos" which means by the hands only. Also, as an objective straight Parsippany area chiropractor, my main purpose is to remove vertebral subluxations so that the innate intelligence of the body can express itself more fully. Having said that, should I as a chiropractor be correcting vertebral subluxations by increasing the quality of the matter (flesh)? Apparently that is what some chiropractors attempt to do by using therapeutic procedures. It may be possible to accomplish that objective, but that objective is not chiropractic. In fact, it is medicine. It is medicine's objective whether they realize it or not. If people get well (and by well I do not mean temporary relief but TRUE health), it is because DIS-EASE has been corrected. Wellness or health only occurs when the body is receiving a full complement of mental impulses from the innate intelligence of the body. People become asymptomatic for short or long periods of time because the body, in spite of continued nerve interference, can often muster sufficient strength to bring the person back to a higher level of function. But, that is not restoration of health or wholeness. If the spark plug to one of my car cylinders is not firing, I may be able to ride on 5 cylinders but that is not a healthy car. It was designed to run on six.
Medicine can occasionally and usually temporarily increase the quality of the matter. This increase is called treating the diseases. Medicine tries to change the matter. Occasionally, usually by dumb luck, they succeed. When they succeed in changing matter so that the body can restore normal nerve supply by correcting its subluxations, people get well. More often they do not succeed. That has been the reason for the failure of medicine over the centuries and the reason for chiropractic's existence and its success. We do not attempt to change or improve the matter so that it can correct a vertebral subluxation, instead we give the innate intelligence of the body and external invasive force to work with, circumventing its limitations of matter so that it can correct the vertebral subluxation itself. You can take either approach in the restoration of health. Improve the matter so the body can correct its own vertebral subluxation - that's medicine. Or, give the body an innate force it cannot otherwise get so that it can correct the subluxation - that's chiropractic. People will only get well when the restoration of vital mental impulse has occurred. Either method will do it. Chiropractic does it consistently and effectively. Medicine does it occasionally and unintentionally.
The choice is yours. At Selimo Chiropractic, serving the greater Parsippany area, I am committed to doing it consistently and effectively.

CHIROPRACTIC--It's Not About Your Back, It's About Your Life!!
Too often we just do not take advantage of good things that are available to us. We may stay at a hotel and never use the pool or exercise room because we do not have time. We may never use the cruise control on our car because we only drive on local roads. The real tragedy is not taking advantage of something because we just do not know about its advantages. Imagine having a television set that you could turn on and off but having no idea it also had a channel selector. You would never get the maximum enjoyment out of a television with a 181-channel hookup if you did not realize you could get anything more than 10 minutes of C-Span!
Not utilizing its full potential is exactly what some chiropractic patients do. They go to a chiropractor for a back problem and never realize that chiropractic is so much more than a mere treatment for a musculoskeletal problem. When a vertebra becomes subluxated, probably the least important thing is that the back pain may result. It may be important to the person with pain, just as C-Span is important to someone who enjoys that type of programming, but there is a whole lot more to television than that one channel. Likewise there is a lot more to chiropractic than problems with the back. At Selimo Chiropractic, located in the Parsippany area, I address the vertebral subluxation which interferes with the vital messages that travel over the nervous system between the brain and every organ, tissue and cell in the body. This interference seriously impairs the body's ability to carry on all its normal and natural functions. The body's chemistry is upset, organ function is affected, resistance is lowered and all coordinated activity is decreased. The digestive system does not work 100%. You cannot think clearly and you can not get all the benefit from your rest and exercise that you should. Even the food that you eat will not be utilized properly by the body if there is nerve interference. When a vertebral subluxation occurs, the body begins to function in an abnormal manner. The individual in this state may be totally unaware of what is happening in his or her body. Unless someone tells them about the benefits of regular chiropractic care, they may never know until it's too late to regain their health. If all you could ever watch on television was C-Span, you could just find other forms of entertainment, like reading a good book. Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to correcting vertebral subluxations and keeping the life channels open so your body's nerve system works at its maximum.
That is why at Selimo Chiropractic, located in the Parsippany area, my philosophy is that it makes sense to have your spine checked on a regular basis and to have vertebral subluxations corrected whenever and wherever they are found.

DRUGS TO TREAT DRUGS!!
An article by syndicated columnist George Will appeared in the editorial section of a local paper. Mr. Will usually has cogent insights into the world and its problems. (He wrote an especially good book on the game of baseball). In this editorial, however, he misses the mark by a mile. He rightly recognizes that the drug problem is overwhelming us and that our Federal Drug Policy has apparently failed to stem the problem. He briefly cites the history of the rise of heroin as a derivative from the 19th-Century medicine, morphine. Here is the solution: The government "should have provided the resources for research to discover chemical compounds that block or reverse the pleasure and addiction-producing effects of drugs." Is that stupid or what? Are we going to vaccinate all the children in the sixth grade and up on a yearly basis with this wonder drug? Or are we going to expect that drug addicts will line up to receive this miracle drug?
We must come to a realization that what causes our problems is not the solution to them. People take drugs because they believe that a temporary quick fix is the answer to their physical, emotional, mental, social and/or spiritual problems. They think that way because the thirty-second television commercial has taught them that drugs are the answer to all their problems.
At Selimo Chiropractic located in the Parsippany area, it is my belief that we are not going to resolve the country's drug problem until we all realize that the cause does not come from the outside. It is not in Turkey, China, or Colombia. It is inside certain human beings. Something is lacking in their lives that causes them to seek temporary relief or fulfillment in a drug. A drug that they know deep down inside will eventually harm them or kill them.
Chiropractic does not have all the answers to the drug problem. We do present a philosophy that says do not treat symptoms, do not treat effects but look inside for the cause. If we begin to raise a generation of children who recognize that drugs are not an answer to man's absence of health, perhaps they will also recognize that they are not an answer to man's absence of happiness. If they understand a prescription does not really restore health, they will realize that neither does a quick fix restore happiness. And, at Selimo Chiropractic located in the Parsippany area, it is my strong belief that this is where the drug war must begin.

The Role Of Fever (A philosophical explanation)
Hopefully you have read part I and part II of this article. If not, please go back and do so. Having practiced in the Parsippany area for 10 years, I know philosophically that the Innate Intelligence will not elevate the temperature to a point that would be harmful. Does that seem intelligent? But, what temperature is too high?
Well, for one person 104 may be in his or her normal range, for another it may cause convulsions. Just saying "if the practice member is adjusted, his or her body will normalize itself" is not enough. A practice member's body even though in adjustment, may pass that critical point due to limitations of time or matter in spite of the efforts of the innate intelligence to bring it down. I have never heard of a case of a child who was adjusted going into convulsions, but, in theory it is possible. The parent is therefore faced with a decision. Is the child experiencing a beneficial or harmful fever? What is the critical point and has it been passed? Am I interfering with the innate intelligence of the body doing its job? Does the child need emergency first aid measures to bring down the fever? These are difficult questions to answer. It's one thing when it's your own body and you have an awareness of it's needs, but when it is someone else's, especially your little child, the decisions are tough. But then, no one ever said being a parent was easy.
Like most other aspects of health care the key is common sense. At Selimo Chiropractic which serves the greater Parsippany and Whippany area, It is incumbent upon me as the doctor of chiropractic to explain this aspect of chiropractic philosophy to the practice member so that he or she can make a common sense judgement for himself or herself or the small child. Some parents will make mistakes, instituting first aid treatment when the fever is not critical. But, the more people understand the philosophy of chiropractic, the less parents will be interfering with normal bodily functions, particularly in the case of moderate and slight fevers. Most importantly, the more people understand the philosophy of chiropractic, the better off the practice member and their families will be. This will lead to healthier people whose bodies will work optimally and never reach that critical point where emergency intervention is necessary. In turn, the end result will be less medication with dangerous side effects pumped into the body. And this, ultimately, is a very good thing.
Remember, health comes from within. If it came from a bottle, there would not be enough bottles to go around or Trader Joe's or Gym's or Chiropractor's offices etc!!!

The Role Of Fever Part II ( A Philosophical Discussion)
Hello, I'm Dr. Pat Selimo of Selimo Chiropractic located in the Parsippany area. As was mentioned in a previous blog, there are two types of fevers. Harmful and beneficial. And, as we learned in part I, the harmful fever is of the type that the body doesn't want or need.
The harmful fever was due to a dysfunction of the fever-regulating mechanism. When the interference was removed the body began to work better and normalized the temperature almost immediately.
The second example is a beneficial fever. The child may not have even needed an adjustment, or, if he or she did need to be adjusted, it did not affect the fever. In this case, the fever runs its course, the little one is perhaps uncomfortable for a while but eventually when the innate intelligence of the body has used the fever to serve its purpose, it will reduce it. I have seen this type of fever at my office, Selimo Chiropractic located in the Parsippany area, a few times.
There is a third situation which isn't seen too often. This is the small child who is brought in with no particular symptoms and shortly after an adjustment the child begins to manifest symptoms of being a little sick tyke. The fever regulating mechanism was not working properly, only in this case, that malfunction manifested itself as a lack of fever when one is needed rather than a high fever when one is not called for.
The difficulty is in the parent attempting to determine a beneficial fever from a harmful one. Fever is a symptom. All symptoms are either a manifestation that the body is adapting (the innate intelligence of the body expressing itself with the beneficial fever) or that the body is failing to adapt do to limitations of time and matter (the harmful fever). We know that the innate intelligence will not elevate the temperature to a point that would be harmful. That would not be intelligent. But what temperature is "too high"?
You will have to wait for the conclusion of this three part article to find out the "SECRET".
Caio until next time.

The Role of Fever (A Philosophical Explanation)
The experiments of Dr. Kluger and Bernheim at the Department of Physiology, University of Michigan demonstrate the the value of fever as a bodily defense mechanism. This has been the position of the chiropractor for many years and, at Selimo Chiropractic located in the Parsippany area, I share the same belief as that of Dr. Kluger and Bernheim. However, the fact remains that at times fever can be harmful. It can lead to convulsions and on rare occasions, brain damage. It appears there are two types of fever. For the purpose of this three part article we will refer to them as harmful and beneficial.
In this three part article I will be explaining the types of fevers and the benefits and/or dangers of these fevers. Then I will be informing you on the fallacy of a so called "normal temperature". Lastly, I will explain the vital role chiropractic plays in this and its role in your overall health.
Before I address the types of fever, there is a very important philosophical principle to keep in mind. Each and everyone of us have a built in wisdom that governs and runs the body. This intelligence, known as the "Innate Intelligence" will never do anything to harm the tissues in which it resides. That would not be intelligent and the innate intelligence always functions intelligently. Since the innate intelligence will never do anything to harm the body and since fevers can be harmful, it logically follows that the temperature regulating mechanism is able to dysfunction. The location of the temperature-regulating mechanism and the means by which the dysfunction occurs is not necessary to a philosophical discussion, but it is related directly to nerve interference at the vertebral level. At Selimo Chiropractic, located in the Parsippany area, I have experienced adjusting a small, feverish child brought in by a concerned parent and seeing the body normalize its temperature almost immediately. This is a clinical demonstration of the body's ability to regulate itself and do it much better without vertebral subluxation. This was obviously a harmful fever which the body did not want. It was due to a dysfunction of the fever-regulating mechanism. When the interference was removed the body began to work better and normalized the temperature almost immediately.
This is the first type of fever. I will be explaining the beneficial fever in
my next blog.

Why I Do What I Do
At Selimo Chiropractic, located in the Parsippany area, I don't mix my profession with others because I choose not to. It is not because I am too stupid to diagnose medical conditions or too lazy too perform medical procedures. It is not because I cannot afford modalities or because some therapeutic procedures are esthetically distasteful to me. It is not because I blindly follow an ideology or worship at the feet of a cult figure. And, it is definitely not because I have never given any thought to the value of non chiropractic procedures.
Quite the contrary. At Selimo Chiropractic, near Parsippany, I practice straight unmixed chiropractic because I have concluded what is the sum total of the practice of the practice of chiropractic. I have not arbitrarily delineated it as such or accepted it as such because B.J. Palmer, developer of chiropractic, said it! No, I have thoroughly investigated, examined, and reasoned out my position. By sound logical thinking I have concluded what my objectives are and have excluded everything outside the practice of chiropractic. I have rejected all else because an understanding of pure chiropractic precludes the usage of procedures that have nothing to do with the principles of Chiropractic.
If there are any questions regarding this article, please contact me at 973-668-8928 or send me an email at pselimo@yahoo.com

The Safety Pin Cycle
"A critical element in understanding the necessity of chiropractic care for every man, woman, and child is explained by a model known as the safety pin cycle. The model illustrates, in a very simple way, the vital communication that occurs in the nerve system.
Brain sends signals to tissue cells via one side (known as the efferent side) and tissue cells communicate back with the brain via another pathway (the afferent side). In this manner, your body is constantly communicating with itself.
Unfortunately, this communication can be disrupted by vertebral subluxation, a misaligned spinal bone that disrupts nerve system function. Vertebral subluxations are caused by an inability to adapt to physical, chemical, and emotional stresses that we encounter every day.
The chiropractor's objective is to locate, analyze, and assist in the correction of vertebral subluxations (restoring normal alignment and function of the spine to allow the proper brain-body connection). This helps to ensure that messages are getting through loud and clear."

"Life Changing" New Years Resolution
It's a New Year. Have you set any goals for yourself? For your family? For your "LIFE"? Did you lose that extra 5-10 pounds you promised yourself you would? Why not? Or, did you just step into the gym for a week or a month and then leave, only to return 15 pounds overweight? In other words, did you make a bunch of attainable promises to yourself only to fall short of the mark? You only have one person to blame for that!! NO, it's not Santa Clause!! As if...!
However, don't feel bad because as long as you are still above ground, you have a great opportunity to redeem yourself. With gym memberships more reasonable than ever, you will have a chance to once again set awesome goals for yourself in 2011. The GINORMOUS million dollar question still remains to be answered. Are you inspired enough to do what it takes to reach theses goals? There are people who watch things happen, there are people that talk about whats happened, and then there are those who, as the GREAT philosopher Samuel (Sammy) Selimo would say, will make things happen! Which category will you fall into this year?
Goal setting books always mention setting goals in various areas of life. Financial, personal, relational, spiritual, business/work and health. The intention of the "Monthly Tip" newsletter is to encourage, guide and inspire you to reach the highest level of health possible. At Selimo Chiropractic in Whippany, I am committed to helping you achieve and experience a greater level of health which will have a positive impact on your Life!!! Although I do have goals set for various areas of my life, I can't really determine what these goals should be for you since I know nothing about your personal needs.
Having said that, there is definitely one area that I believe is my moral obligation to elaborate on, inform people of, and ultimately inspire people to make intelligent decisions about. As a chiropractor, I don't only check people's spines for subluxations. It is also my responsibility to educate you on the importance of LIFETIME maintenance care. Did you know at Selimo Chiropractic in Whippany, I see people for what I call LIFE ENHANCEMENT care from 4 days of age all the way up to the ripe age of 72? Why? Simply put, your central nerve system controls everything. That's right!! Every cell, organ, gland and muscle is under direct control of the central nerve system. This system is the most vital system in the body for so many reasons. It's the first one that develops in the human body, it's completely encased in bone and if it is ever injured, never heals. This is extremely important because the expression of life comes through your nerve system. Just how vital is the function of the nerve system? You would have had to ask the late Christopher Reeves that question. Christopher (Superman) Reeves fell off a horse and landed on his second cervical vertebrae and shattered it. The impact was so severe that it severed part of his spinal chord and as a direct result of this injury Mr. Reeves was paralyzed from the neck down for the remainder of his life! Consequently, he had to breathe through a tube, was connected to a ventilator and permanently confined to a wheelchair.
I believe it is of the utmost importance to eat organic raw food (as much as you can), work out on a consistent basis, drink adequate amounts of water, pray and get the proper amount of quality rest. In addition to that, I implore you to get your spine checked by a chiropractor. A straight chiropractor will assess your spine for subluxations and then correct those subluxations so that the wisdom of the body can express itself more fully. This will ultimately result in optimal function and a greater level of health!!! And, optimal function + greater health = A GREATER LIFE EXPRESSION!! Do you think this will help you reach your goals?
Sincerely,
Dr. Pat

Sincerely,
Dr. Pat
